By Clifford Odets
Bessie Berger lives during the Depression with her subdued husband, left-leaning idealist father, two children and a boarder. Craving a respectable life, she forces her unwed, pregnant daughter, to marry the family’s boarder. Her son sides with his grandfather to object. Dreams and disappointments, hopes and fears, encouraging words and bitter put-downs pepper Odets’s turbulent comedy-drama “Awake and Sing” about a Jewish family struggling to stay afloat in the Depression. Rife with conflict and battle between factions in a family, this show asks the question “What’s life for, anyway?” This picture of life being lived for all it’s worth, despite subsisting on the edge of poverty, brings a story of human aspiration you won’t soon forget. Sure to inspire spirited conversation during the election season.
