I would describe the Beggar Woman as someone who is deeply traumatized and alone; yet she is one of the few characters in the story who, albeit mentally unstable, is morally centered.  Her unconscious connection to her child provides her with her only shred of hope in a dark and painful world.

“I would describe Johanna as a caged bird, very much like the “Green Finch and Linnet Bird” that she sings about. Like the birds, she is trapped within a cage, longing for the freedom to fly. Because she has been kept hidden from the world by Judge Turpin, she maintains strong sense of innocence, but she is also endlessly curious. She wants to know what secrets are being kept from her.  Until she can find a way to get out of the cage that she’s in, she’s always going to be peeking nervously through the bars, trying desperately to see everything that the Judge wants to keep her from.”
